HP, Motorola Announce Groundbreaking Recycling Initiatives

SustainableBusiness.com News

Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HPQ) and Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) have both announced ground-breaking recycling initiatives.

Hewlett-Packard will begin paying customers to return equipment that has residual value for recycling. HP´s website will give a quote on any brand of unwanted computer, monitor, digital camera, personal digital assistant or smart-phone. If there is residual value, customers can send the product back to HP to receive cash back through the HP Consumer Buyback and Planet Partners Recycling Program.

Motorola Inc. announced it will unveil a cell phone made with recycled post-consumer plastic this week at the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The MOTO W233 mobile phone is said to be the world´s first made with post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate plastic and is 100% recyclable.

Motorola also said it is the first carbon neutral phone. The company offsets the carbon emissions created while manufacturing, distributing and operating the phone through renewable energy investments and reforestation projects through a partnership with Carbonfund.org.
